MICHAEL BERGIN

Scores of women, no doubt, have pictures of nearly naked model Michael Bergin taped up in various spots in their offices and homes. But nobody has a better reason than his mom, Lorraine,
who has given Michael's famous 1994 Calvin Klein underwear ad a place of honor in her kitchen. "Just like any mother would," she says proudly, "I put my children's work on the refrigerator."

Well, better on it than in it. Bergin doesn't like food analogies. "I don't consider myself beefcake," he says. "I want to be skinny, lean and cut." With a little help from a mostly low-fat diet ("Cheese is evil, but I love it," he says), his wish has been granted. At 6'2'' and 180 lbs., Bergin has the looks clients love. When he snagged a lucrative contract with Calvin Klein last year, he also won Calvin's beautiful publicist Carolyn Bessette, 28, whom he dated until she hooked up with another buff body, John F. Kennedy Jr.

Of course, managing quadriceps and biceps is easier than managing love affairs, and Bergin has been building his body since high school in Naugatuck, Conn., where he made both the
varsity baseball and basketball teams. At the University of Connecticut, where he majored in marketing, Bergin took up weight lifting and, he says, "got huge and cut" in just one
year. After graduation, when he discovered that designers like their models thin, Bergin started running. Now, he says, "I change my body when I have to," depending on the demands of
clients.

These days he is also branching into acting. He has appeared in CBS's Central Park West and snagged a bit part in the forthcoming Merchant-Ivory film The Proprietor. "I want to be
viewed as a person, as Michael Bergin as a whole," he says. Which is at least as good as the sum of his parts.

JOEL WEST

His boyhood years on a 60-acre quarter horse ranch in Indianola, Iowa, sound like a Ralph Lauren fantasy. He had his own pony, and everybody wore cowboy hats. Still, 22-year-old West looks back on those days as anything but idyllic. "I was a sensitive kid, and I wasn't really into the lifestyle," says West, whose family owned a rodeo arena. "I didn't like horses, and the rodeo clowns hung out at the house, drinking beer."

Adds his mother, veterinary technician Jan Gipple, who was divorced from his father, Rob West, in 1989: "It was real important for Joel [below, at 5, with little brother Jake] not to be labeled 'country' or a hick." Instead, at Indianola High School, West recalls that he created a different image: "Total prep. Tight Guess? jeans, penny loafers, nice plaid shirts and the woven belt with the end hanging down." By the time he enrolled in Buena Vista College in Storm Lake, Iowa, he had grown into his oversize lips and almond-shape eyes. With encouragement from a local photographer, West left school in 1994 and headed for New York City, where he landed runway work and print campaigns for such designers as Calvin Klein and Versace. Now he has fame, fortune--and the underlying basics. At the end of every modeling gig, he says, "I always take the underwear and socks."

Models: Joel West and Milla Jovovich

Milla is totally amazing and we had the best time, the whole shoot had a really good feel to it, well organized, Jean Baptiste Mondino is a great guy to work with. The Calvin Klein ad people were wonderful and treated us like celebrities, we each had our own dressing trailer and diector's chair, it was just a really cool shoot.

Joel West: He was awesome to work with (Jean Baptiste Mondino), so much fun. He's this stocky bald-headed French guy, he's just a blast to work with. I had no idea of what I was doing at the time. It was such a massive production. As far as modeling, it was the biggest production I've ever been on. I was so young and yet they trusted me to work with Milla Jovovich on this huge production.

It was in a big Hollywood studio and they built this huge long hallway. It was the first time for me that I realized "Wow, this isn't like modeling, this is like acting." There was a camera, I got to move, and I was like: "Man, I'd love to do movies, I could do this all day." It was a blast. Just three days and the most lucrative job I did in five years. It was a great campaign. http://modelswim.com/index.php

Excerpt of a Milla Jovovich Interview by Glenn O'Brien
Glenn O'Brien: I worked with you years ago on the Calvin Klein Escape TV campaign with Jean-Baptiste Mondino. It was a long time ago, but you can still find the uncensored version of the commercial on YouTube.

Milla Jovovich: Really?

Glenn O'Brien: Yeah. It’s the one where the guy licks your neck and you flip your shoulder straps off and say to the camera, “Take me!”

Milla Jovovich: There’s so much stuff that I would never see again if not for YouTube. There is a performance of mine from when I was, like, 18, in Austin,Texas, at the local record shop, singing with my band. I mean, it’s just the cutest thing ever.

1997 VH1/Vogue-Fashion Awards

MALE MODEL OF THE YEAR:

nominees :

Tyson Beckford

Tyson Beckford, VH1's Male Model of the Year in 1995, has inspired over ten web sites strictly praising him on his looks. Mr. Beckford's star quality has landed him Ralph Lauren campaigns and the sighs and ah!s of Toni Braxton. (Beckford appeared in Braxton's "Un-break My Heart" video.) Beckford, who is represented independently by Bethann Management, is now shying away from the press and has been quoted as saying that he dislikes the paparazzi.

Jason Fedele

Leaving his guitar behind to pursue modeling was not an easy thing for Fedele. A trained musician, he was playing gigs at CBGB's in New York with his band, Shockpus, before he was spotted on the street. At 26, Fedele seems a little more focused about his ambitions. Modeling is a here and now thing while music is the real passion. Luckily for him, his second career has provided much exposure after only a year or so of work. He has shot a CK campaign with David Sims, a Gucci campaign and a Joop fragrance campaign.

Enrique Palacios

Enrique Palacios has been modeling for only one year, but already he has worked with the industry's top photographers, like Steven Meisel. He has a versatile look that can range from boy toy to London street punk to 1960's Italian matinee idol -- picture a young Marcello Mastroianni or Alain Delon. He is indeed tall, dark and handsome! His exotic presence has earned him the coveted Dolce & Gabanna campaign and a place in the mind of fashion editors and photographers.

Scott Barnhill

Hailing from sunny Florida, Scott Barnhill is something of a cross between Johnny Depp and the cute boy next door. A natural from the start, he was discovered dancing the night away in a nightclub a year ago. The campaigns he has worked on to date include Tommy Hilfiger, Dolce & Gabanna, and Versace (shot by the renowned photographer Richard Avedon). When he's not hanging out waiting to pose, he's taking on the streets on his killer skateboard.

Charley Speed

At 19, Charley Speed has cornered the modeling market by appearing in the most innovative fashion campaigns. CK (shot by Craig McDean), Armani and Iceberg (shot by Peter Lindenberg) are just a few of the campaigns he's been featured in. Discovered in his native London, he's now with New York's Next agency. Despite his family background in the film industry, Charley is concentrating on modeling and, on his time off, skateboarding.

PHOTOGRAPHER OF THE YEAR

nominees :

Craig McDean

Craig McDean is one of the new breed of photographers that pioneered a raw, energetic style of fashion photography. Emerging from a London school of artists, McDean took the soft muted colors of 70's photography and added a 90's edge with a little trashiness and sexiness. Featured in the celebrated "Fashion in the 90's" photography book among the likes of Nan Goldin and David Sims, great things are expected from this younger lens man. McDean has done campaigns for Prada and Calvin Klein and shots for numerous magazines like the Face, W magazine and Harper's Bazaar. His timeless photos of Stella Tennant and Amber Valletta are featured in W's 25th anniversary issue.

Steven Meisel
Known for his highly stylized and conceptual photographs, he immortalized the fashion trinity, as they were known in the mid to late 80's, of Christy Turlington, Naomi Campbell and Linda Evangelista. His black and white photographs captured them with cigarettes in hand, black eyeliner streaming down their faces, and flawless clothes. In 1992, Meisel reached one of the pinnacles of his career by shooting Madonna's infamous "Sex" book. The racy book came wrapped in layers of protective coverings and was banned in most chain bookstores outside of New York and L.A. A former stylist and Parsons School of Design dropout, Meisel's career flourished on the fashion editorial pages of Italian Vogue in the early 80's. His controversial coup came with the Calvin Klein "kiddie porn" jean campaign, featuring pre-teens in seductive poses in 70's wood-paneled rooms. Meisel, who prefers to keep a low profile, is always under hats and sunglasses, but he continues to shoot for every major international magazine and most recently photographed the new Dolce & Gabanna campaign.

Terry Richardson
Can you imagine Kate Moss and Elvis in Vegas glory for a fashion spread? Terry Richardson made this fantasy possible for the September issue of Harper's Bazaar. This hot new photographer plays up his concept to the max, whether it's kitschy Americana, the rich hues of a landscape or someone's front lawn. Looking like he belongs in a Midwestern rock band rather than at a fashion shoot, Richardson has won rave reviews from fashion folk and the art community. He shoots for Vanity Fair, Bazaar and Visonaire (the limited art/fashion book produced by renowned fashion editor Stephen Gan), and established his career in British magazines like ID and the Face. Among the campaigns he's recently worked on are British designer Katherine Hammette, Matsuda and Levi's.

Mario Testino
Mario Testino can always make the ordinary remarkably intriguing. Much like a film director, he sets scenes, giving his models characters and a new life. Testino broke into the scene in the early 90's as a kind of reporting fashion photographer. While shooting, he's completely under wraps, creating an enclosed set where only his assistant and the model are allowed. The end result is always a collection of eye popping images that make you look twice after thumbing through forty pages of editorial. A regular contributor to W magazine, Harper's Bazaar and Vanity Fair (where he shot Madonna for the cover in '96 after "Evita"), he's known for his good natured smile everywhere he goes. In 1996 Vanity Fair named him photographer of the year. Among his busy editorial schedule, he has also shot campaigns for Missoni, Gucci and Donna Karan. Testino has the distinction of having taken the last commissioned photographs of the late Princess Di, photographed for Vanity Fair this summer.

Bruce Weber
Bruce Weber reinvented fashion in the early 80's. His signature velvet-like, sensual black-and-white images of men and women out of the studio on sandy beaches in places like Miami and Rio opened the doors to new photographers like Herb Ritts and Meisel. Among his many celebrated books and films are the 1986 "O Rio De Janerio" and "Gentle Giants," which was about Newfoundland dogs and was later developed into a short feature shown at Sundance in 1995. In 1988 his documentary "Let's Get Lost," covering the life of the late jazz great Chet Baker, was nominated for an Academy Award. In between his work as a photographer for a myriad of campaigns and magazines, he has recently finished a documentary on Robert Mitchum and will have a retrospective of his work exhibited in November in London's Portrait Gallery.

WINNERS
Male model of the eyar: Charley Speed
Female model of the year: Karen Elson (Kiara Kabukuru, Carolyn Murphy, Tanga and Stella Tennant were the other models nominated)

Joel West by Tiziano Magni

Joel West by Tiziano Magni for Calvin Klein Underwear - Fall 1995

THE MEDIA BUSINESS: ADVERTISING - Calvin Klein is withdrawing, and reshooting, some underwear ads after more complaints are heard.
By Stuart Elliott
Published: Wednesday, November 8, 1995

FOR the second time in three months, Calvin Klein is embroiled in a controversy over his advertising, though this one covers -- or uncovers, to be precise -- familiar ground: his penchant for underwear ads that bare flesh.

Even so, another Klein campaign is being revamped after coming under fire. Warnaco Inc., which manufactures the underwear brand bearing Mr. Klein's name, and Calvin Klein Inc., his company, say the underwear advertisements will be changed; some are being withdrawn and replaced with ads that have already appeared without incident.

The latest outcry is centered on sensual print ads for Mr. Klein's line of men's underwear that feature a hunky, long-haired -- and scantily clad -- model named Joel West. He is a 20-year-old from Indianola, Iowa, who has been signed to a seven-figure contract by Calvin Klein Inc. to represent its designer apparel, housewares and other licensed merchandise.

The underwear brouhaha is far less fierce than the attacks that erupted over a campaign for Calvin Klein jeans, which angry critics likened to child pornography. In late August, Mr. Klein withdrew that campaign, which mimicked cheesy adult videos, though the Justice Department is investigating whether, as opponents charged, the models were under age.

Still, the underwear ads -- also created by CRK Advertising, the in-house team at Calvin Klein Inc. in New York -- are provocative in their own right. They rank with recent campaigns featuring the rapper Mark (Marky Mark) Wahlberg and the model Michael Bergin baring their "Calvins," and the erotic billboard from the early 1980's on which the pole vaulter Tom Hintnaus, clad only in briefs and an appendix scar, loomed over Times Square.

Mr. West appeared last month in print and outdoor ads for Mr. Klein's menswear and eyewear without generating headlines.

But that changed when an explicit underwear ad featuring Mr. West turned up in the November issue of Esquire magazine, followed by the same ad in the December issue of Playboy. As shot in black and white by the photographer Tiziano Magni, Mr. West, dressed only in very tight gray briefs, was posed with his legs wide apart and staring frankly into the camera.

Because the ad followed so closely on the heels of the jeans campaign, articles about Mr. West ran in publications including Newsweek, New York, The New York Observer and USA Today. And in an interview that appeared on Friday in the trade newspaper Women's Wear Daily, Linda J. Wachner, chairwoman, president and chief executive of Warnaco, excoriated the ad.

Ms. Wachner said she found the briefs ad offensive and said she had not approved it for publication. That was a powerful condemnation because Warnaco, rather than Calvin Klein Inc., is responsible for the media budget for the underwear campaign, which runs from $8 million to $10 million annually.

But the briefs ad, it turns out, is only one in a series of four ads that are running in magazines like Rolling Stone, Spin and Vibe. Another of the ads, appearing in the December issue of Spin, portrays Mr. West, clad in white boxer briefs, as apparently sexually aroused.

"It's a provocative, sexy ad," J. Matthew Hanna, associate publisher of Spin in New York, published by Camouflage Associates, said yesterday. "But it's an underwear ad. It should be provocative.

"We were more than happy to accept the ad," he added, "because we just don't think our readers are taken aback by that type of advertising." The median age of the readers of Spin is 23 to 24, Mr. Hanna said.

In the ad in the December/January issue of Vibe, Mr. West seems calmer, wearing a ribbed tank top pulled up to display his hard abdomen and pants half undone to reveal his boxer briefs.

"I personally did not have a problem with" that ad, said John Rollins, publisher of Vibe, a Time Warner magazine, in New York. "We're very excited to run it."

However, that ad and the rest are unlikely to be around much longer.

Ms. Wachner, in an interview yesterday from her office in New York, said the campaign would not be seen further, except in publications that have already gone to press.

"Every ad that could have been pulled was," Ms. Wachner said, "and the women's ads are being substituted." That was a reference to ads for Mr. Klein and Warnaco's line of women's underwear, featuring the model Christy Turlington, which elicited no complaints when they appeared previously.

"We're in the business to sell underwear," Ms. Wachner said, "but we're not in the business to have problems." Warnaco bought the Klein underwear business last year for $62.5 million plus additional fees.

As for the future, Ms. Wachner said, "the campaign is being reshot" for its next appearance.

Gabriella Forte, president and chief executive at Calvin Klein Inc., echoed Ms. Wachner.

"A new campaign will be launched in the spring," she said, describing the current campaign as "very limited." Reports that Mr. West was to appear in his underwear on billboards and in television commercials were "absolutely not true," she added.
