Brand: Formula 9
Year: 1984, 1985, 1990
Model: Ty Spears
Ph: Marc Raboy
"Ty Spears said that he became interested in the skin care business when Gordon Lee products, once a cosmetics company in New York, hired him as a model to promote their line of skin care cosmetics for black and Hispanic men. Its first ad ran in Gentlemen's Quarterly, he said.
Now 34, Spears runs Tyspears Cosmetics, a complete skin care line for black men, including a special product for men who suffer from razor bumps and ingrown hairs.
Black men tend to get razor bumps and ingrown hairs because the hair on their faces tends to grow inward rather than outward and curls up under the skin, making it difficult to shave, Spears said. Tyspears' Formula 9 is a conditioning creme formulated to deal specifically with these problems, he said.
Ty Spears was once told by modeling agencies that he would never make it in the business because he didnt have the right look."
