Jules et Jim, François Truffaut’s 1962 masterpiece of French New Wave cinema. It’s the story of Jules (Oscar Werner) a reserved Austrian and Jim (Henri Serre) a sophisticated Frenchman, two aspiring writers who meet in the bohemian Paris of 1912 and form a friendship through their desire to discover more about the arts, women and French boxing. When the enigmatic Catherine (Jeanne Moreau) comes for lunch one day the scene is set for one of cinema’s most famous and disturbing love triangles.
Although she begins a relationship with Jules, both men are affected by her presence and her attitude toward life. A few days before the declaration of war, Jules and Catherine move to Austria to get married. The men both serve during the war; however, they serve on the the opposing sides and each fears throughout the conflict that he might have killed the other.
From an enchanting, even playful, beginning the film gradually darkens as war, infidelity, jealousy and selfishness all take their toll on the three friends’ relationships.
